EFFORT-PRECISION AND GAIN-RECALL BASED ON A PROBABILISTIC NAVIGATION MODEL Integrating Post-Query Navigation within a Measure of Retrieval Effectiveness

چکیده

Traditional evaluation of retrieval systems is based on implicit assumptions about the users’ interaction with the system. It is assumed that the user is presented with the ranked results and examines the documents one after the other in the order they are listed. In this paper we argue that such a model is obsolete in the case of the Web and structured document retrieval, where navigation is an integral part of the user’s search strategy. We advocate that post-query navigation needs to be reflected in the evaluation framework. We substantiate our proposal with the evidence of post-query navigation from user studies and discuss examples of systems that have been developed with the consideration of the user’s browsing behaviour. In order to capture retrieval effectiveness for query and navigation based search, we introduce a measure of retrieval effectiveness that comprises a probabilistic model of the users’ post-query navigation.

Purpose: Traditionally, there have many metrics for evaluating the search engine, nevertheless various researchers’ proposed new metrics in recent years. Aware of this new metrics is essential to conduct research on evaluation of the search engine field. So, the purpose of this study was to provide an analysis of important and new metrics for evaluating the search engines. Methodology: This is ...

Cosine Similarity Measure and Genetic Algorithm for extracting main content from web documents

Because of the use of growing information, web mining has become a primary necessity of world. Due to this, research on web mining has received a lot of interest from both industry and academia. Mining and prediction of user’s web browsing behaviors and deducing the actual content in a web document is one of the active subjects. The information on web is dirty. The Effectiveness of Thesauri-Aided Retrieval

In this report, we describe the results of an experiment designed to measure the effects of automatic query expansion on retrieval effectiveness. In particular, we used a collection-specific thesaurus to expand the query by adding synonyms of the searched terms. Our preliminary results show no significant gain in average precision and recall.

0 Logical Imaging and Probabilistic Information Retrieval

In Information Retrieval (IR), probabilistic modelling relates to the use of a retrieval model that ranks documents in decreasing order of their estimated probability of relevance to a user’s information need expressed by a query. In an IR system based on a probabilistic model, the user is always guided to examine first the documents which are the most likely to be relevant to his or her need. ...

Model-driven indexing: Indexing by ignoring content

Indexing can be viewed is the process of segmenting a large information with the indices acting as descriptors for the subspaces. In the case of information retrieval systems, the indices are used to retrieve documents based on a user query, whereas in the case of knowledge navigation systems, the indices circumscribe browsable spaces of documents. In this paper, I take the position that tradit...
